Cost and space efficiencies are driving the use of multi-channel power amplifiers in small and large-scale projects. Geny Caloisi reports.

Whether we are talking about a boardroom, a restaurant or a massive stadium, saving space and maximising the usage of power are priorities in the world of pro AV audio installs. Phil Sanchez, QSC senior communication and PR manager, points out: “Multi-channel amps are found in both fixed installations and portable applications.

“Restaurants, retail, houses of worship, theatres, stadia, education; any place where a high channel count is required and rack space is at a premium are good candidates for multi channel amp configurations.

“Likewise, cost can be a consideration as multi channel amps can sometimes be a more cost-effective solution versus multiple two channel amplifier configurations.”

TV down the tubes

InAVate, business insight – TV down the tubes

When it comes to ways of transporting and sharing media, IP networks are becoming rapidly ubiquitous. To watch video, live or on demand on any device and at any time, IPTV is the favoured solution.

Rich video transmission over the internet in this context may include: Live TV, Video On Demand (VOD), digital signage content and Interactive TV (iTV). AV specialists that provide these services to enterprises, deliver it across an access agnostic, packet switched network that employs the IP protocol to transport the audio, video and control signals. IPTV deployments allow tight network security and multiple levels of choices.

Can you hear me clearly?

Times have changed in the congress solutions and discussion systems arena. Openness and transparency is the mantra for public meetings. Private meetings also demand remote access and ease of use. Geny Caloisi talks to the lead manufacturers in this industry to find out the latest.

Conference systems are used to increase speech intelligibility and clarity. The quality of the equipment and technology used is vital in achieving this. However, as John Hunnisett form congress solutions specialist Sound Advice points out: “If you use any of the equipment blindfolded you would not be able to tell the difference between one brand and the next.”

The manufacturers’ solutions available in this market differ on type of network connections; the sophistication of the user interface; integration with personal devices and the kind of data-sharing they allow.

All interviewees agreed that simultaneous translation is a growing requirement.

The main trend is a move towards wireless and paperless – sometimes even participant-less with people attending the meeting virtually.

Objects and stories

Museums are places were objects and stories converge to introduce visitors to different ways of life, history, art and culture. In the last half century, AV technology has started to play an important role in this environment, providing new ways of engaging with the audience. Geny Caloisi reports.

Museums collect, document, preserve and display objects. But this is not all they are about. A museum also tells a story. The layout and type of technology used, depends on the objective of the museum – is it a local museum; is it for tourists; is it object-heavy or is its narrative built just using audiovisual resources?

It’s also important to distinguish between traditional museums (scientific, historical and cultural), which are usually owned by the government or public organisations, and the private corporate and brand marketing-driven museums. Looking at the trends and technologies in this market, it’s clear that one size doesn’t fit all.

When an outreach programme providing multimedia for young people in deprived areas launched its latest campaign, it equipped a mobile studio with the latest a-v. Geny Caloisi climbed on board.

RollingSound is an education and training project aimed at less advantaged youngsters who may have not had the chance to express their creative potential. With a specially converted bus as its mobile base, a new outreach scheme was launched in central London at the start of November, offering users the chance to experience a wide spectrum of audio and video technologies and produce original pieces of work. The bus was unveiled in Lewisham at a family-friendly ‘urban’ themed event that showcased the available courses: 3D animation, video game design, photography, film editing and web design.

The idea of telehealth has been around for many years. Telemedicine generally refers to the use of communications and information technologies for the delivery of clinical care. In this discipline medical information is transferred via telephone, the internet or other networks for the purpose of consulting and sometimes even remote medical procedures or examinations.

Videocommunication now has the prime role of improving the quality of life for patients and reduc ing costs for healthcare structures. Broadband capacity, better videoconferencing equipment and the use of high definition are making telemedicine a real option for the health industry. There is also an important role to be filled by av integrators on designing systems that address local needs.
